This year I have experienced countless highs and lows (I’m sure some of you can relate). However, God has proven His faithfulness to the good plans He has for my life. By His grace I have maintained a positive attitude and a grateful spirit because “we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28 NASB) God allows the circumstances of life for our maturity which is always for our good and His glory. Growing into a mature person is not a quick process but we can be thankful for the wisdom and love of God to provide exactly what we need to be the healthy, fruitful and vibrant witnesses for Him; “oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, the He may be glorified.” (Isaiah 61:3b NASB) Here are my thoughts about a few things I know most plants, trees and vines need to grow. Think about these things and give thanks for God’s growth plan for your life.
Plants need light to grow. Our Lord is the Light we need to live and grow up as strong testimonies of His power and grace. In the darkest days, the loving light of our Lord is still present and we only need to keep looking up to Him in order to live. Temptations, attacks and challenges come to hide the light of God’s loving care just like dark clouds on an otherwise sunny day. But just as the sun continually shines regardless of eclipsing clouds, so the Son is always interceding for us and in Him we have every thing we need for life, godliness and growth. Let’s thank God for the Light of Life and His steadfast love and mercy that endures forever.
Plants need water to grow. We all need to be refreshed and there is nothing like a deluge of water in a parched and dry winter. Pouring rains are like refreshing relationships in a dry season. I thank God for the relationships that have been a source of inspiration to me especially when I felt dry. Encouraging words and affirming comments keep us uplifted and positive lest we become sullen and negative in the journey. Thank God for every person who called, sent an encouraging email, text message or postcard. Thank God for the tokens of affection and the laughter shared with people that bless our lives. Appreciate the kindness and the affirmation received because it is the refreshing water we need to live!
Plants need soil to grow. The best soil has some mixture of fertilizers, without it the plant will not be nourished. Fertilizer does not smell good but it can make a huge difference in the growth of the plant. In order to transform us there must be several “fertilizer” moments that won’t be pleasant but they help us grow. Therefore, we can’t afford to become bitter when people or situations are unpleasant in life. Instead we must take from every situation something good that will strengthen our faith and character. Thank God for the “stuff” (fertilizer) He’s used to enrich your life so you can bear more fruit for His glory. It didn’t come to destroy us but only to make us stronger so we must be grateful.
I’m sure you can add to this list with insights on how God is growing us for His glory. Feel free to share and let’s thank God together. Happy Thanksgiving!
